BME Design Courses

A $30,000 grant from the Jefferson Trust will test bed a “Progressive Innovation” approach to bioengineering design. Students in all 2009-10 BME design courses (1st – 4th year) will be challenged to create low-cost, simple, robust devices to support the health of mother and infant.

The grant will show what can happen, in a single year, when a critical mass of undergraduates focuses on a central design theme. We hope to show that, a few years out, students will continue to pursue perinatal projects, as they progress through BME’s design courses—leading to an increase in innovation that is measurable through new patents, products, and publications.

BME 2000 Introduction to BME Design and Discovery

BME2000From Day 1, the challenge is to self-identify a real world problem and design its solution. Resources include the department’s own rapid prototyping machine, access to state of the art research facilities, and expert consultation within and outside of UVa. Students present their work at an annual public symposium.

BME 3080-3090 The IDEAS Lab

If there is a single course that demonstrates UVa Biomedical Engineering’s approach to B.S.–level education, it’s the Integrative Design and Experimental Analysis Lab. The list of prerequisites for IDEAS is long—just about every course that a 3rd year major has taken up to that point. The challenge is for students to synthesize prior knowledge as they learn the methods and techniques of molecular biology, cellular microscopy, cell and tissue mechanics, physiological measurements, signal processing, and medical image analysis. By the end of the year, students are designing and conducting complex experiments on their own.

Drawing on conceptual design skills, knowledge obtained in lecture courses and the IDEAS Lab, and literature and prior art reviews, students develop and verify a working medical device prototype, a computational model, or an experimental data set. One place students identify potential projects is the Capstone Project Fair held each fall, where students interview with potential project advisors from local industry and the medical, engineering, and nursing schools. Other students define their own projects, spinning off prior research or design in a BME or affiliated lab. At the Capstone Symposium in late spring, students demonstrate to peers, faculty, and future employers that they are qualified biomedical engineers, prepared to enter the work force and make a difference in our discipline.

BME 4550 BME Advanced Design (Elective)

This course is intended to bridge the gap between BIOM 200 and Capstone, for students who want more in-depth design experience prior to Capstone. The major student effort in this class will be directed toward the design and validation of a novel device, method, or program. Teams will be expected to prototype their designs to prove feasibility. The final report in the class is a grant submission to the NCIIA. Recently, two teams were awarded $16,000 each to develop their projects during their fourth year.
